The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the actual ocean and not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that connect with their families until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild.
